ANZAC Day
We have been learning a little bit about the reason ANZAC day is special to New Zealand and Australia. We have made poppies, read a brilliant big book called Dawn Service and have been using some resources on the internet to dress a soldier ready for battle 100 years ago. You can click here to use this at home also. We talked about why we thought the soldiers needed these things on their uniform and why they wore a uniform. This was a great discussion with some very thoughtful, considered answers.
We have also been looking at some photos and ribbons that Miss Browne has from her granddad who was in the First World War. We have then made our own medals like the brave soldiers received.

Our first butterfly
Today our very first butterfly hatched out of its chrysalis just before lunch time. We left it to pump its wings and stretch out. After handwriting we passed it around so everyone could hold it. Some of us were lucky enough to have it 'pee' on us!
We used the computer to work out if it was a boy butterfly or a girl butterfly. We found out that the butterflies with the black spots on its hind wing were boys. We looked very hard at our butterfly but there were no black spots so we had a girl!
Some of us were a little worried that the butterfly might hurt us but it only tickled with its feet while it was holding onto our fingers. It was lovely to hear lots of encouraging words to our friends to have try if they were a little worried. We were very proud of everyone for having a go!
I wonder how many more butterflies we will have hatch?
We took it out to the butterfly garden to let it go. We hope it comes back to lay some eggs on our swan plants next year.

Discovery Time
On Monday we had our first Discovery Time for the year. This term we are learning to be collaborative, this is one of our school dispositions.
In the yellow room we used puppets and dress ups to put on plays. In the blue room we were learning how to make a vertical garden. We also enjoyed buying and selling things in our shop.
There were also lots of fun activities in our outside space like the stilts, hula hoops and the water tray for us to use.
We really enjoyed our first Discovery Time and are looking forward to working with others on our activities next week!
Check out who our Discovery Star's were for our first week of showing Collaboration. Well done Isabel and Lilly.
